Aims
It was formed as a Biomedical wing of RSTS, with the target of developing, fabricating and distributing medical devices locally. It aims to make modern health care technology affordable to common people in both rural and urban areas of Bangladesh. In the long run, its ideas and experiences would be shared with other Third World nations who could then apply them to their own respective countries.

History
In the first meeting of the General Body of RSTS on 23 January 1996, the members resolved to form an institute as a non-profit organ of RSTS named, ‘Bangladesh Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Appropriate Technology (BiBEAT)’. The major activity of RSTS has been through BiBEAT from then on. BiBEAT tried to disseminate healthcare products developed indigenously and services for people using these equipment. BiBEAT was to have several divisions or centres as follows, to carry out the aims and objectives of both RSTS and BiBEAT.

f) Education and Training Division

The activities of BiBEAT was to be run by a board. The first board of members of BiBEAT was as follows.

It was also resolved that no Members of the Board including the Director will get any salaries for their services in the Administrative Body. It will be purely on an honorary basis.

Activities of BiBEAT
The main activity of RSTS has been through BiBEAT from then on. BiBEAT tried to disseminate healthcare products developed indigenously and services for people using these equipment. The first to offer was a routine clinical diagnostic service for nerve conduction using a Computerized EMG/Evoked Potential equipment which Professor Rabbani had developed earlier with the help of scientists at Sheffield, UK, under a British ODA supported programme. He had started giving routine service using this equipment earlier since 1988 on his personal capacity, which was then brought under the folds of BiBEAT. Similarly, Professor Rabbani had earlier started pilot distribution of a device named ‘Anti-Sweat’, an iontophoresis equipment to treat excessive sweating of palms and soles, which he had developed in collaboration with Dr Reza bin Zaid, a dermatologist in 1992. Initially it was distributed through a group which he had named ‘Rabbani Research Group (RRG)’. This was also brought under the folds of BiBEAT. Through educational articles, advertisements, BiBEAT tried to promote the item and has been offering solution to thousands of sufferers of excessive sweating since then. Next item to distribute was a Muscle & Nerve stimulator, required in physiotherapy, since 1996. Physiotherapists at different hospitals and clinics are still using this device giving therapy to patients with successful outcome. In 2009, on a request and financial support by Baqai Medical University of Karachi, Pakistan, BiBEAT developed a Computerized Dynamic Pedograph instrument in collaboration with the department of Biomedical Physics & Technology, of the University of Dhaka. This device was delivered in 2010 and is still working there. Since then two such units were sent to Pakistan, one unit to Srilanka and two units were installed in Bangladesh.

BiBEAT Limited
A company limited by Guarantee, in which nobody is a shareholder
On 25 February 2013, the institute BiBEAT was transformed into an independent entity and registered as a non-shareholding company named, ‘BiBEAT Limited’ under ‘Company limited by Guarantee’ (article 29) clause of the Government. Under this clause, the paid up capital is zero, no individual can take a share of the profit of the company, and the liability of the initial subscribers is limited by the amount mentioned in the Memorundum and Articles of Association. The profit can be used for further expansion of the company or given to charity. Thus it was a success of the fostering activity of RSTS. It fostered an institute which eventually became strong enough to stand as an independent entity. Now BiBEAT limited is independently carrying out the tasks of promoting, fabricating and distributing technology based products developed indigenously by RSTS or by the Department of Biomedical Physics & Technology of the University of Dhaka through appropriate negotiations and contracts.
